Senior Dating: Tips and Tricks
By Ewa Frydel, Owner
Who says we can't find love later in life? There are seniors successfully dating who would say it's completely possible. Not to mention, dating for seniors is an incredible form of companionship! No, seniors aren't connecting with dating apps like Bumble or Tinder, unless that's their thing. You see, as we age, our views on love and dating change.
The dating scene of our youth can become a bit daunting when we're older. Although, a delicious dinner out might still be fun, long - and we mean long - strolls on the beach, staying up late cuddled up to a scary movie, and going clubbing might shift a bit. That doesn't mean seniors can't enjoy a walk, movie or dancing! With the right mindset finding love as an aging adult can be just what the doctor ordered. Even if your senior parent is already in a relationship, dating is a healthy reintroduced remedy for the soul.
If your senior is single, widowed and considering the dating scene again, there are things to consider. As wiser adults, they may know a thing or two about what kind of partner they're considering. Does your elderly parent want more of a casual relationship or something more serious, like marriage or til-death-do-us-part? If your senior mom or dad knows who they're looking for during this chapter of their life, you can help narrow down the search and find someone who meets most, if not all, of the criteria.
New outlook on life.
One of the great benefits of seniors dating is that they get a new outlook on life full of new experiences. This is the kind of mindset that keeps an aging mind sharp and an elderly heart youthful. Especially as we age, we can get stuck in our old ways and resist change. While that's comforting, it can also lead to resentment, boredom, and fear of socializing.
Online dating can still be a thing.
Perhaps dating apps used by millennials and Gen Z are not suitable for our senior loved ones, there are online dating platforms that can really help with the search. Many websites host senior dating as an option. These platforms are aware to keep the search and meetings safe and easy to connect with the person of interest.
Be honest… no catfishing.
Keep things honest with online dating, as it should always be. Your senior is looking for love during this time in their life and that means they're more serious about finding the right match that suits their desires. Have a recent photo and be honest about their interests. The match up will be that much greater and beneficial to your parent's wishes, as well as safe.
Good Old Fashioned: Meet in person.
If your aging parent is social, get them to community events! It's a fantastic way to meet someone in person and possibly develop a friendship first. Plus, if they're at the same event, chances are they're interested in the same thing. Like-minds make a great match during this time in their life.
Although senior dating is unique to what we're used to in society, it's still an important element to many senior's lives. Finding love is finding companionship, joy, and a new outlook on life. Don't be afraid to get your aging mom or dad involved with dating again. You can be a part of the search to help them with technology or transportation to a social event. Remain open-minded and you may just discover new ways to keep your own love life interesting.
