Senior Men and Prostate Health

By Ewa Frydel, Owner

For aging men, prostate health becomes a top concern.

The prostate is a small gland located below the bladder and is crucial in the male reproductive system. Like many other parts of the human body, the prostate can be cared for and senior men can maintain optimal prostate health and a happy life.

Tips for Prostate Health

  1. Exercise. While we know physical activity is important for all bodies and ages, as well as genders, prostate health can greatly benefit from movement. Walking, swimming, and even cycling all help the blood flow to the prostate gland. 30 minutes of exercise each day or most days is recommended. Allow movement to be at a moderate pace. Check with your doctor to find forms of movement that is suitable for you.

  2. Good eating habits. Of course, healthy nutrition is beneficial for prostate health. Many seniors should make sure their diets are like the following, but male seniors can greatly benefit from eating foods that are rich in:

    • Fruits

    • Vegetables

    • Whole Grains

    • Lean proteins

For prostate specific foods, add more tomatoes, broccoli, green tea, salmon, and nuts because they are high in antioxidants.

3. Hydrate. Staying hydrated helps flush out the toxins built up in the body, which includes the urinary system. This helps reduce risk of urinary tract infections and issues related to the prostate.

4. Screenings. When your doctor informs you about getting your prostate checked, do not skip this appointment. Regular screenings can help keep you informed on your current state of health, but also if you need to make lifestyle changes, like diet and exercise. Early detection for any issue is a great way to prevent severe outcomes. The routine you may get is called a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test and/or digital rectal exam (DRE).

5. Manage stress. Stress has a serious impact on our health. While there are levels of stress that are beneficial and normal to us, chronic stress can tax our bodies and this includes the prostate. Be sure to incorporate stress management into your daily life to help restore balance.

Much of the tips listed here are basic and have a lot to do with healthy habits during the day and ones you can easily starting adding in now. It’s no surprise that exercise, nutrition, stress management, and seeing your doctor regularly are helpful to reducing health-related issues to the prostate.
