Embracing a Youthful Mindset in Your Golden Years
By Ewa Frydel, Owner
One of the most common things about common people is having a common mindset.
If we look around, people all day are consumed with their thoughts and not all of them are positive.
How we think becomes how we define ourselves and our lives.
If we think in terms of “it is what it is” or believe our negative thoughts, over time we become susceptible to resentment, bitterness, boredom, and depression. The longer we hold onto this negative mindset, the more difficult it becomes to think positively.
This is especially true for those in their golden years. Think, how many elderly people do you see smiling often, in love with their life, and embracing abundance?
If you know of a senior who is thinking there’s not much left to live for, let them know they couldn’t be further from the truth! The best part about a youthful mindset is that it can happen for any of us, at any age, at any time.
Luckily for children, we’re all born into a youthful and imaginative mindset. As we age, we become conditioned to “adult” too hard, or else we’ll fail at life.
Ignore this myth! Here’s why:
Why Seniors Should Embrace a Youthful Mindset:
Energy booster. When aging adults feel high-on-life and joyful, they can’t help but move their bodies. They become engaged with multiple activities and with friends and family, pets, and children. You can tell when an elderly person is excited about life because they’re still dancing, walking, and starting new projects. Being too old doesn’t stop them. Life isn’t over yet, and they’re not waiting until it is.
Rebalances happiness. Seniors who have a positive outlook on life tend to be happier. Happiness can come when we’re less focused on whether we’re happy or not, and more so when we simply focus on the joyful parts of life.
Our aging family members can find more joy and reduce stress by paying closer attention to all the things around them that make them feel joy. During a time when it’s possible to think negatively about the end of life, they can instead choose to feel alive and believe every day forward is a day in their legacy. Which is worth it.
Sharp as a nail. When seniors have a positive attitude toward life they are more engaged in many activities. This helps keep their mind sharp and improves cognitive functioning. They will be learning continuously. They believe that just because they are older doesn’t mean they need to stop learning and keep their brain health sharp.
Live longer. You may have caught on, but all of this activity and keeping an aging mind sharp, bonding with friends and family, and loving life without worrying about the end of their life, is going to keep your senior alive longer. The best part, every day until that day, would have been spent in pure joy and positivity.
There are countless studies that demonstrate people who have a positive outlook on life tend to live longer and better quality lives. Starting this behavior now is beneficial because it only gets better as we age.
The time will pass no matter what, how do you want your senior loved one to enjoy it?
