How Seniors Can Age Gracefully

By Ewa Frydel, Owner

Society teaches us the opposite of our true nature. Aging is a part of our life cycle and it occurs the moment we are born.

We are taught to cover up age spots, fill in fine lines, and dye our hair before anyone notices the first sign of gray.

Aging is a part of all of us and there's no escaping it, so why not handle it with grace?

The funny thing is, actually accepting aging with grace helps keep us feeling, and eventually looking, more youthful. We understand at some point in our adulthood, especially when we become seniors, we can feel insecure about our appearance. We can see ourselves as losing our beauty.

New science has revealed healthful and clean ways to enhance our aging beauty more than ever before. If you are the au naturel type or miss your days of makeup and poised hair, you deserve to feel good and look good in your own skin.

When we do feel and look good, we gain confidence. It's true.

How we feel about our self-image, no matter what age, can greatly impact our self-esteem.

Now that's powerful information for seniors!

Self-esteem is essential for our aging loved ones.

Let's look into ways to maintain that beauty from within and see it manifest when you look into the mirror.

1. Your skin. Your skin is the largest organ of your body. It deserves and desires much-needed care. This is essential as we age because our skin loses elasticity and becomes dry, thin, and wrinkled. Cleansing with a product that matches your skin type is helpful, but moisturizing is a top priority. Try slathering on a moisturizer within minutes after your daily bath or shower.

Most of all, skincare comes from the inside. This brings us to our next tip.

2. Eat a clean diet. Nothing ages us faster than processed foods, too many animal products like dairy, refined carbohydrates, white sugar, salty foods, alcohol, and smoking. These items can constipate or complicate your gut, preventing vital beauty nutrients to enter your bloodstream and cells. They also dehydrate, taking out your moisture and glow.

With that, they cause tension and inflammation which enhances the signs of wrinkles. Instead, consume hydrating fruits and eat high-fiber vegetables. Try to eat home-cooked whole foods, too.

The closer to nature, the more naturally beautiful you'll be.

3. Hydrate. This needs to be its own tip because water is an essential nutrient, just like proteins, carbohydrates, and fats are. Hydrating from the inside helps you look and feel hydrated on the outside.

Try to get at least two liters a day or more if you are an active senior. Don't wait until you're thirsty to drink, either. Thirst is a sign you've waited too long. Have fun, too! Try coconut water or flavor water with freshly squeezed lemon or lime juice.

4. Fats. We're still on food because beauty truly starts on the inside. Don't just eat any fat, try to avoid saturated fats and trans fats (like hydrogenated oils) or foods very high in them. Instead, enjoy natural fats like olives, avocados, nuts, and seeds if your diet allows it. You don't need too much, but these offer many health benefits and they also make great at-home facial masks!

Retain your moisture, mobilize bowel movements, and keep your skin plump with nutritious fats.

5. Makeup at any age. No one is stopping you from wearing lipstick or shading your eyebrows. Try clean, environmental products that are vegan and cruelty-free (derived from beneficial plants/never tested on animals).

Using non-toxic formulated makeup will help restore ageless beauty and actually provide benefits to your skin rather than strip it away with toxicity. Play around with makeup again and don't for one moment feel silly about it. While you're at it, have fun with your hair and nails, too.

6. Exercise. Exercising is a great way to get your face plumped and cheeks rosy. You'll also circulate your blood which can help cleanse out toxins and send a glow to your appearance.

It has all-around wonderful benefits to aging gracefully. It can strengthen posture, as yoga does, and it can make you feel confident, by being proud of yourself. It can also help you relieve stress which does wonders for wrinkles.

7. Embrace natural beauty. After eating a clean diet, moisturizing your skin, keeping hydrated, and a daily bath, you'll already start to feel and look more beautiful. Natural beauty is a part of us all and our birthright.

Sometimes all we need to feel and look beautiful is to just give our bodies some good nutrition and a tender touch of hydration. That alone does wonders for your confidence.

There are many, many ways to age gracefully. Too many to list here!

In conclusion, loving yourself just the way you are and accepting your age and how you age is all you need.

Beauty comes from caring for who we are and showing our bodies love.

Nurture your skin.

Feed your body right.

Love yourself and love others.

To age with grace is to live with grace, in everything you do and say. Remember, you're already beautiful. Now you're just maintaining that.
